LonWorks is essentially a communications protocol embedded on a programmable microchip that, when included in a piece of equipment - be it HVAC, security or lighting - allows that device to be immediately compatible with any other piece of equipment that shares that technology. The technology not only allows for complete interoperability, it provides for extended access, so that all of the systems within a building or inventory of buildings can be controlled through a single system interface. And that system can be managed via a desktop PC, a telephone or an Internet browser.
